Europe
Maciek grew up in Cracow and got his Polka chops while drumming at countless Polish weddings. Learning stage craft from the legends of Polish song, Ewa Demarczyk and Marek Grechuta, Maciek was also active on jazz, fusion, classical and avant-garde scenes in addition to teaching music at several institutions. Maciek holds MA degree in classical percussion from Academy of Music in Cracow.
After performances with Cracow Radio Symphony Orchestra in England (world premiere of Penderecki's Polish Requiem), Maciek decided to stay behind and after several months in London, emigrated to South Africa.
Africa
Maciek's decade in South Africa allowed him to develop his wide-ranging musical interests. He performed with Johannesburg and Cape Town symphony orchestras, jazz and African music artists including Winston Mankunku, Robbie Jansen, Basil ‘Mannenberg’ Coetzee, African Jazz Pioneers, and others.
Maciek's extensive involvement with the progressive theater circles of the Market Theater in Johannesburg allowed him to compose and perform his own music at several theater productions supported by popular and critical acclaim (see PRESS sidebar). Accompanying modern dance classes was also a part of Maciek's activities as a drummer.
He was active as a drum teacher at many centers around the country, including Mega Music in Johannesburg, 1820 Foundation in Grahamstown, and at Cape Town's Musical Action for People's Progress, The Jazz Workshop and the University of Cape Town.
America
In 1993 he arrived in New York and has been working mostly with African performers, including nearly 15-year collaboration with a Cameroonian singer Kaïssa.
Maciek has been a faculty member of the Drummers Collective music school in Manhattan since 1998. He co-wrote Afro-Caribbean & Brazilian Rhythms for the Drumset and is preparing a play-along Afropop book for drummers.
At present, Maciek is focusing on writing his own material and performing in various settings around New York City in anticipation of a first solo album.
Among his past and present stage collaborators are Tony Cedras, Leo Traversa, Patrice Blanchard, Essiet Okon Essiet, Rene Hart, Hill Greene, Gregg Fine, Dave Gilmore, Tom Guarna, Chris Biesterfeldt, Sam Dickey, Michael Valeanu, Aaron Heick, Joe Ford, Mark Shim, Sean Wayland, and others.
Maciek endorses Canopus drums, Remo skins, Sabian cymbals, Vic Firth sticks, Axis Percussion hardware and RTOM practice pads.
